LGBT Organization makes significant marks for inclusion of LGBT families in Belize

By BBN Staff: Our Circle, an LGBT advocacy group based in Belize is launching new projects aimed at strengthening ties within the local LGBT community.

The organization has launched their Brown Bag Series for “Activists, Advocates & Allies”.

The Brown Bag series is being administered under the Sexual Acceptance for Everyone (SAFE) project being funded by the Inter American Foundation (IAF).

The group aims to identify and support individual role models and pioneers who are equipped to advocate for safe and inclusive environments within already existing social structures.

This is a bi-monthly discussion during lunch breaks, with persons passionate about a cause and interested in making a difference, regardless of the cause.

So far, at the Center, the organization has had William Neal and Dolores Balderamos hosting the first two sessions.

The next session is dated for Wednesday February 6, 2019 with Carolyn Reynolds.

The organization is also engaged in proposing a request for an opportunity to collect national data regarding Rainbow Families.

“The experiences of Rainbow Families, in Belize, and the diversity and complexity of family structures have evolved and Our Circle fully believes that the Census 2020 is the platform to gather and disseminate this information,” a statement from Our Circle said.

In addition, the group has made a submission to Dr Colin Young, Chief Executive Officer of Social Security Board and Donelle Hawke, Manager Legal Services Department of Social Security Board, with concerns and recommendations regarding the inclusion of LGBT families within the Social Security Scheme.

The organization says that further inclusion is needed to properly devise a system which truly caters to all persons and families in Belize, including LGBT families.
