Belize Cancer Society celebrates World Cancer Day

Posted: Monday, February 4, 2019. 2:59 pm CST.

By BBN Staff:The Belize Cancer Society (BCS) is challenging Belizeans to take a moment to think about their health during today’s celebration of World Cancer Day.

As a part of the celebration, the BCS unveiled its new theme which will be used for the next three years, “I am and I will.” Senior Administrator at the BCS, Heather Reneau, told Breaking Belize News (BBN) that the theme is focused on having an impact on cancer by addressing the various risk factors associated with it.

“It doesn’t matter where you are, who you are, you have a personal responsibility to your friends to your colleagues, your families, and your community to spread the message of awareness,” Reneau said.

Reneau highlighted issues such as alcohol consumption, tobacco usage, imbalanced diets, and low physical activity as issues that persons can address to lower their risk of getting cancer.

“So on this day, especially, if you have not adopted that lifestyle, if you have not adopted something that will reduce your risk, that you are going to change, that you are going to be a supporter, an advocate, an influencer…” Reneau added.

Over 1,400 people have died from cancer in Belize between the years 2010 to 2017, with cervical cancer being the most prevalent for women and prostate cancer being the most prevalent for men. The BCS is calling on Belizeans to get screened for cancer as many cancer deaths are preventable through early diagnosis.
