Young male manatee found dead in Placencia

Posted: Thursday, February 7, 2019. 9:14 am CST.

BBN Staff: On February 5, 2019, the Southern Environmental Association (SEA) received reports of a dead manatee at the entrance of Aquamar in the Placencia Lagoon.

A necropsy was conducted by Dr. Marisa Tellez from the Crocodile Research Coalition.

It was later confirmed that young male manatee suffered from broken ribs sustained due to watercraft activities within the lagoon.

Manatees are the largest marine mammals native to Belize but are currently listed as “endangered”.

SEA encourages all boaters to exercise caution and adhere to “no wake” zones within the lagoon.
