Weekend football roundup including Belize’s ‘El Classico’ results

By BBN Staff: In football sports news, this weekend saw the defending champs Belmopan Bandits and Verdes FC meet in the Premier League of Belize (PLB) 2018/2019 closing season. This game is normally referred to as Belize’s version of ‘El Classico’ and was played on Saturday night at the Isidoro Beaton stadium in Belmopan.

The first half ended with neither side scoring, but early in the second half Jonard Castillo scored his first goal since he began playing with Verdes FC, and gave Verdes the 1 nil lead. Verdes maintained this lead up to the 73rd minute when an auto-goal was scored by Elroy Smith, tying the game at 1 a-piece. This 1 to 1 score held up until the end of the game.

Also on Saturday night, the Police United went up against Altitude FC from Placencia.  The game ended with a score of 2 goals to 1 in favor of Altitudes FC. This is the first home victory for Altitude FC since the PLB 2018/2019 closing season began.

Meanwhile the San Pedro Pirates had a comfortable win over the Wagiya FC defeating them by a score of 4 to 1 in San Pedro.

On Sunday, the BDF traveled to Punta Gorda to take on the Freedom Fighters on their home turf. This game ended in a scoreless draw.

At the end of this week, the PLB standings are as follows:

Verdes – 10 points

San Pedro Pirates – 9 points

Belmopan Bandits – 9 points

Altitudes FC – 9 points

Police United – 6 points

BDF Football Club – 5 points

Wagiya FC – 4 points

Freedom Fighters – 4 points
