Belize Rugby Union says ‘Stop the senseless killing’

Posted: Wednesday, February 13, 2019. 2:25 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The Belize Rugby Football Union issued a statement yesterday calling for a stop to the senseless killings in Belize.

The union says that for too long the senseless killing of our youth – Belizean youth – has been going on, almost unchecked and it has got to stop.

“These murders, unnecessary and mostly for stupid reasons, are happening weekly if not daily, and have become almost tolerated now because the citizens feel powerless to stop them, gangs are running fearless through our communities and families are running scared to report what they know – event when the murder of a close relative occurs,” the statement says.

The union says that the Government of Belize is at fault and it is their failure to address the basic causes of criminality (corruption and poverty) which is the root cause of the social ills destroying families across the country, and their inability to provide a solution hides a level of ignorance that is staggering for a country of this size.

The union further demands that the Government through its law enforcement agency, do more to apprehend and charge culprits.

The union also calls on the Government to implement more effective policy to deal with the lawlessness affecting communities across the country.

‘A police force fit for purpose would be a good start,’ the statement says.

The Union is also calling on Belizeans to stand up and demand more from the authorities, the Minister of National Security and the Commissioner of Police.

President of Rugby Belize, Tony Gillings has offered himself to assist authorities and Belizeans to deal with youth and social programs.
