Ankle monitors coming to Belize?

Posted: Thursday, February 14, 2019. 11:19 am CST.

BBN Staff: The Ministry of National Security, in an effort to curb rampant gang violence, is considering adopting the use of ankle monitors to track the movements of known criminals within gang circles.

Minister of National Security, John Saldivar, told the media this week that the ministry has tasked a committee with reviewing the possibility of adopting the method and making the necessary considerations and recommendations.

“I am hoping that in another sixty days they can give me their findings and then we move forward in terms of implementing the relevant legislation to put this in effect if it is seen to be feasible,” Saldivar said.

He stressed that the consideration forms a part of a greater push to incorporate the use of technology to enhance the efficiency of law enforcement. That push will also come with increased surveillance cameras throughout Belize City in the coming months.
