By BBN Staff: The Belize Police Department has concluded that the murderer responsible for the stabbing death of Elizabeth Rousseau, 74,  and the non-fatal stabbing of her husband Gary Hakes, 84, is familiar with the Oasis community in Corozal, where the murder took place.

Head of the National Crimes Investigation Branch, Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvett, said that the killer gained access to the victim’s home via a bathroom window sometime between 7:45 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. after cutting the power to the couple’s home
via a switch located outside the premises.

“From an investigative standpoint, it had to be someone who had some knowledge of the area to know where the switch is, so we are looking at several angles in respect to that,” Myvett said.

Oasis is a community of retirees in northern Corozal. Over the past few years, there has been an increasing number of foreign nationals dying in Belize under various circumstances. Last year, the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was in Belize to
determine if Claire Rigdon, who was found dead in a pool at her
residence in the Consejo area of Corozal on October 13, was killed or
died accidentally.

The FBI also conducted investigations into the deaths of  Anne Swaney and Drew DeVoursney, both murdered with no suspects to speak of. In January, the US Department of State issued a travel advisory to US nationals traveling to Belize, saying that they should exercise caution  because “violent crime – such as sexual assault, home invasions, armed robberies, and murder – are common even during daylight hours and in tourist areas…”
