By BBN Staff: Belize’s Special Envoy for Women & Children, Kim Simplis Barrow, released a statement this morning calling on Belizeans to refrain from sharing private images or videos of anyone, regardless of who they are. Barrow said doing so is an invasion of privacy and can have a huge impact on a person’s life.

“Let us stand up for women, men and children where their privacy is being violated! If you are sent something that is intended to be private: PRESS DELETE,” the statement said.

Barrow emphasized that everyone has a right to privacy and noted how unfortunate it is that the age of smart phones and social media has made us all vulnerable to malicious personal attacks. “We have witnessed more and more people become victims to serious breaches of trust by those who are closest to them,” the statement said. Barrow also noted that because our society is so small and interconnected, the consequences and ripple effects can be particularly devastating and hurtful, not only to the person whose privacy has been breached, but also to their family and loved ones.

Barrow’s statement comes on the heels of outrage on social media following the circulation of inappropriate images of Belizean women. BBN also takes the time to condemn such actions and calls on Belizeans to desist from gleefully sharing and posting such images which are harmful and damaging to a person’s reputation. We would all expect the same courtesy if ever the shoe was on the other foot.
