By BBN Staff: The Roman Catholic Church today issued a statement regarding a list of alleged sexual offenders which included Father Oliver Smalls Jr., informing the church was made aware of the situation by the Diocese of Richmond in Virginia, USA; which compiled the list.
The church affirms that there have been credible allegations of sexual abuse of minors made against Smalls and others included on the list. The Catholic Church also says it has forwarded Father Smalls’ case to the appropriate Vatican office for further investigation.
Bishop Lawrence Nicasio also informed that he has since removed Father Smalls from ministry saying he will no longer serve in ministry of the Belize City-Belmopan diocese. Bishop Nicasio said he has also informed Father Smalls that the credible allegations against him have been forwarded to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith for further discussion. He also said an investigation concerning this matter will continue in this Diocese.
The church ended by asking for prayers for all the victims of sexual abuse in Belize and in the world and for the healing of all involved. It said the Diocese remains committed to the care, safety and protection of minors in schools and parishes.
