Another eight weeks until Fire Service gets new chief

Posted: Thursday, February 21, 2019. 7:20 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The Belize National Fire Service has been without a Fire Chief for over eight weeks, following the retirement of former Fire Chief Ted Smith and it may take up to another eight weeks to find a replacement for him, according to Minister Edmond Castro.

Castro, who has responsibility for the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), encouraged those who feel they can fill the post of Fire Chief to get in touch with him so that he can arrange for an interview.

“We are still on the search for the right person so I think within another eight weeks or so we should be arriving at that person that
would be able to manage the fire system,” Castro said.

Benisford Matura took over as Acting Fire Chief when Smith went on retirement leave in 2018 and has been holding briefings with the media following fires since the year began. Breaking Belize News will update
once a new Fire Chief has been hired.
