By Aaron Humes :Anthropologist and social researcher Dr. Herbert Gayle of Jamaica is back on Friday with another presentation on regional trends in managing crime and violence.
This time, he seeks to answer the question of exactly why crime keeps rising despite the efforts of authorities.
Today he gave a preview to reporters in Belize City under the auspices of REACH (Research Education and Advocacy for Social Change).
He suggests that the model of “suppression” used by governments is a reaction to the demands of the population for instant solutions to crime – curfews, rearranging of personnel, use of technology.
But, he noted, crime rates statistically in Belize, his native Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago are little different than in previous years.
In short the solution is a slow and steady process of violence reduction including education if the population on their role and the authorities on theirs.
The lecture draws on Gayle’s own work and that of Professor Anthony Harriott of the University of the West Indies.
Showtime is 6 p.m. Friday at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts and entrance is free.
