by Aaron Humes: Belize comfortably defeated Antigua and Barbuda 96-70 in the matinee game of the 2019 FIBA Americup Pre-Qualifier Tournament being held on Friday night at the Civic Center in Belize City.
Top performers for Belize were Richard Troyer with 20 points 4 rebounds, followed by center Kirk “Shabba” Smith and Tyrone Hall with 15 points each. Belize shot 43 percent from the field and 67 percent from the line despite being doubled by Antigua and Barbuda with 38 free throw attempts to 15. Belize led for all but 17 seconds and closed out the game with the commanding 26 point victory.
With this first victory, Belize is now set up for a crunch clash with Cuba, who beat Bahamas in the earlier match 88-74. That game is scheduled to be held at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday night after Antigua meets the Bahamas.
On Sunday, Belize will play the Bahamas and Cuba will play Antigua and Barbuda.
The top two teams from the tournament advance to the next round of qualifiers for the 2021 FIBA AmeriCup tournament.
