Sports community weighs in on upcoming ‘Big Baby’ fight

While opinions over Miller and the issues surrounding the fight differ from person to person, boxing trainers, the Belize Boxing Federation and even the National Sports Council all stand united in rooting for Miller’s victory.

Dwight Cadle, certified International Boxing Association trainer, told Breaking Belize News that he is cheering for Miller in his bout against reigning champion Anthony Joshua, but acknowledges that it will be a difficult fight given the differences in their fighting style.

“Miller is a brawler, while Joshua is a more refined boxer, and Joshua has more range so this is going to be a tough one,” Cadle said.

Moses Sulph, president of the Belize Boxing Federation, said that while he is cheering Miller on, he feels that the situation puts a spotlight on a need to place more emphasis on the development of boxing in Belize to give more people like Miller a chance to make it to that level of recognition.

Ian Jones, director of the National Sports Council, said that personally and in his capacity as director, he gives Miller his full support.

“He has not been shy as recognizing Belize as his hometown in every interview that he has done,” Jones said. “So I’m hoping that he is successful and that he continues to represent us when he is.”

Jones added that when he spoke with Miller during his last trip to Belize in 2018, Miller had suggested opening a facility in Belize dedicated to boxing, an effort which Jones said would have the full support of the Sports Council.

On June 1, Miller and Joshua will face off at the world-famous Madison Square Garden Arena in New York. Miller’s local trainers are calling on Belizeans to show as much support as they can leading up to the fight.
