By BBN Staff: The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) released its first set of reports referencing 2019 today, showing that the cost of living was down in the month of January.

The SIB’s latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) showed that Belizeans paid an average of 20 cents less for goods and services in January 2019 when compared to 2018.

“It was observed that higher price for home rentals, healthcare and Liquified Petroleum Gas (Butane), were overshadowed by a sharp drop in international airfares and fuel prices,” the SIB said.

The SIB said that the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages category showed very little change when compared to 2018, with only a 0.1 percent decrease. Food prices saw reductions in select food items such as ground beef, beef steak, pigtail, cabbages, red kidney beans and some fruits.

By municipality, goods and services in Punta Gorda were up by over $2 while Dangriga saw a reduction of consumer prices by over $2. Price changes countrywide were otherwise minimal.
