By BBN Staff: According to the latest trade figures released by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB), the country’s exports for the month of January  2019 were up by more than 50 percent when compared to 2018.

The SIB’s External Trade Bulletin, which was released today, showed that the country made some $39.7 million in export revenue, some 56.1 percent over last year. The sugar industry was largely responsible for the overall increase, with revenues going up from $2.6 million in January 2018, to $14.6 million this year. Marine products and bananas also had a good start for the ear, showing increases in revenues by $2 million and $1 million respectively.

However, not all industries had a good start for the year, with crude oil and citrus products both showing declines. Oil revenues went from
$7.7 million to $6 million and Citrus went down from  $3.8 million to $2.7 million. Meanwhile, imports were up 12.3 percent, going up from $144.1 to $161.8 million.
