By BBN Staff: Today, the Ministry of Economic Development, Petroleum, Investment, Trade and Commerce, launched the National Trade Policy (NTP) which will be the guide to all decisions regarding trade development for the next 10 years
The ministry launched the NTP 2019-203, at the Ramada Belize City Princess, gathering various other government ministries, statutory bodies and members of the private sector such as the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) to the event
Minister of State in Tracy Panton, explained that the ministry and its partners have been working to complete the policy for the last two years, but the groundwork began as early as 2014. Panton says that the policy makes multi-sectoral considerations to better prepare the country for external shifts in global markets
“There are many variables, it takes gender issues into consideration it takes labor issues into consideration, it takes the overall fiscal environment into consideration because everything we do affects trade,” Panton said.
Panton further added that the ministry is currently working on an action plan to implement the policy and stressed that implementation will be the most difficult component. The NTP looks at areas such as strengthening institutional capacity, supply chain management enhancement, market access and entry, and trade facilitation among various other things.
