By BBN Staff: Over 20 Non-Governmental organizations yesterday attended the ceremony for the signing of a declaration for continuous collaborative efforts in the protection and conservation of natural eco systems in Belize and Guatemala.
The historic declaration was spearheaded by Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) Belize and Asosiacion Balam from Guatemala.
The declaration was reviewed by members of the Indigenous communities.
Executive director of FCD, Raphael Manzanero, in his presentation shared the importance of collaboration between the indigenous communities of Belize and Guatemala as well as the organizations to preserve natural heritage in both countries.
Among the many activities planned, is the prevention of forest fires, the combatting of wildlife trafficking and the continuous preservation of cultural heritage.
The declaration also reaffirms the organizations’ commitments to research and monitoring.
Manzanero emphasized the importance of the continuous collaboration to protect Belize’s natural resources.
Byron Castellanos of Asosasion Balam noted that Belize’s referendum should motivate the conservation community to continue to partner to ensure the protection and conservation of resources.
The event was held at the office of the Organization of American States (OAS) at the Western border.
