By Aaron Humes:Our count at Breaking Belize News shows – pending none reported over the next few hours as of this writing – eighteen murders reported across the country for the first two months of the year, a slight decrease from 2018 when 25 murders were reported.
On the first day of the year alone there were five murders reported from Lucky Strike to Belize City to Cayo, and within days the ‘acting’ tag from Commissioner of Police Chester Williams was removed, though not without a fight from his predecessor Allen Whylie.
Among the dead were a reputed gang boss, Joseph Babb, and a mother of three, Anita Pineda, who was marked down by her former partner Ruben Castaneda.
The new Commissioner said the three most common nexuses for murder were domestic violence incidents; incidents at nightclubs and bars; and gang warfare.
And while the gangs in the City have cooled down some, murderous intent has been driven as far south as Punta Gorda Town and Independence, where four murders have been reported since the 29th of January when Jordy Flores was killed. Next came a double murder of childhood friends Oscar Humes and Kevin Moro, while Edward Conorquie was left for dead on the Southern Highway near Independence.
Senselessly targeted were U.B. students Masaki Yanai in Northside Belize City and Dwayne Cummings/Avila in Orange Walk Town, as well as Roy Lord on Wilson Street.
And in the Consejo section of Corozal, American retiree Elizabeth Rousseau was taken out in an apparent home invasion.
Police have worked diligently to arrest most of those believed responsible, though the killers in the above cases except for Pineda have not yet been found.
Police will be trying to prevent a record-shattering March, as in 2018 21 homicides were reported en route to 69 for the half year and 143 for the full year.///
