SBDC launches female entrepreneurship programme

Posted: Friday, March 1, 2019. 8:04 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Small Business Development Center (SBDC Belize), a unit of BELTRAIDE launched its first ever entrepreneurship programme today focused on empowering women.

The programme, which is entitled “Promoting Economic Autonomy for Women,” was launched at the Belize Training and Employment Center BTEC office on the UTVE compound in Belize City. Monique Usher Acting Manager for SBDC Belize explained that the six-month business transformation programme differs from other activities held over the years because of its specific focus.

“In the past, we’ve had programmes with women participating but not with a focus on female development. For us, this is the first of its kind its focused on building their leadership skills and self-confidence and attain tools to accelerate their businesses,” Usher said.

The 18 participants were a part of a group of 30 applicants that responded to SBDC’s open call last November. As a part of the acceptance criteria, applicants had to already have their own business up and running for a minimum of 18 months.

The programme will include working sessions focusing on topics such as financial management, customer validation, and customer discovery, as well as soft skills such as effective communication and effective negotiation. Usher also noted that the programme forms a part of a larger regional initiative being done out of with Centro Regional de Promocion de la MIPYME (CENPROMYPE), which piloted the female entrepreneurship programme in
El Salvador.
