Tumul K’in Center of Learning to hold Maya Day in March

Posted: Monday, March 4, 2019. 6:15 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The teachers and students of Tumul K’in Center of Learning invite you to be a part of Maya Day 2019, a cultural festival that has been celebrated for over 12 years.

Maya Day 2019 will feature activities such as the cacao drinking, rice beating, and greasy pole climbing. There will also be cultural displays such as traditional Maya foods and dances, particularly the ‘Deer Dance”.

Santiago Makin, a teacher at Tumul K’in, explained that there will be an initial event, a torch run, on March 11 some 13 days before the actual day of the festival on March 24. Makin explained that the Maya people believe the number 13 to be sacred, and hold the torch run specifically 13 days before as a time of preparation for the festival, while the act of the torch run itself is an invitation for the spirits of the ancestors to gather at the festival grounds.

“The inspiration behind having Maya day is to promote the Maya culture, to preserve it, to protect it, so it can be passed on to the younger generation,” Makin said. “So they can have knowledge and experience of celebrating the identity the uniqueness and the value of their traditions and culture.”
