By BBN Staff: Belize is a melting pot of cultures and every year, school children from pre, primary, secondary and tertiary level institutions celebrate our diverse cultural heritage.

Baptist Pre-School in Santa Elena town today celebrated Culture Day 2019 at the Santa Elena Sports Complex.

The students and parents displayed the history, food, clothing, music and language of six ethnic groups in Belize: Mestizo, Maya, Creole, Mennonite, Garifuna and Chinese.

The event began with a prayer by Baptist District Manager, Manuel Cowo.

The Keynote address was given by BBN’s Zoila Gonzalez.

“It is our responsibility as parents and educators to teach and bring awareness to cultural diversity…Learning if they are Creole, Mestizo, Chinese, Garifuna, Mennonite or Maya builds their self-confidence and skills, it also increases their awareness and appreciation of their culture and identity,” Gonzalez expressed.

The Maya ethnic group exhibited a marimba while members of the San Ignacio Garifuna Council played the Garifuna drums.

Parents and visitors also enjoyed the cultural presentations by the Mestizo, Creole and Chinese students.

The Mennonite booth included a model of a farm, tractors, chicken hatchery, and Mennonite products.

At the end of the presentations, the Mestizo cultural group emerged as 1st place.

Maya took 2nd place and Garifuna 3rd place. The students were awarded by teachers Lela Cowo, Virginia Polanco and Yolanda Cowo.

BBN congratulates all students for keeping Belize’s rich cultural history and heritage alive.
