The PUP said that it is seeking legal certainty and clarity on whether the Minister of Foreign Affairs had the power to legally bind Belize to
the Special Agreement and the Protocol without prior legislative approval.
“Additionally, the PUP is also asking for legal certainty if the Referendum Act provides for the holding of a binding referendum as
required by Article 7 of the Special Agreement,” the PUP said.
The party added that its leader, John Briceño wrote to Prime Minister Dean Barrow asking him not to hold the upcoming referendum until after the court has made its decision because of the constitutional issues that arise from the legal claim. Briceño also asked Barrow to respond to his request.
In February, Barrow spoke to the media at his business forum and said that he would not entertain any delay of the April 10th Referendum for any reason other than a natural disaster.
