Belize bids farewell to Derek Aikman

Posted: Thursday, March 7, 2019. 5:46 pm CST.

BBN Staff: Family and friends of the late Derek Aikman gathered at the St. John’s Cathedral this afternoon to pay their final respects.

He was laid to rest at Homeland Memorial Park moments ago. Aikman, whose love for Belize guided many of his choices in life, passed away on Saturday, March 2.

Several groups, organizations, and individuals from all walks of life have publicly mourned his passing and celebrated his life. Belize Territorial Volunteers Leader Will Maheia spoke with Breaking Belize News today, saying that Belize has lost a patriot.

“I remember when he went with us to the Sarstoon and the Guatemalan gunboat came up to us. He pulled out his bible and read a few verses, and the Guatemalan soldiers stopped and listened to him. That was about the only time we went to that island and didn’t have any real trouble with the Guatemalans. That’s the kind of guy he was,” Maheia said.

Aikman died as one of Belize’s leading voices opposing taking the territorial dispute with Guatemala to the ICJ, but to the attendees at the mass, he was a husband, father, and friend.
