By Lisa Shoman: One day, women of Belize will take our rightful place in our nation’s anthem. I’m not satisfied with pledging “our manhood “ to our liberty, when I have spent my adult life in the fight for the liberty of our nation and the rights for our fellow Jewelizeans. Countless women have pledged their womanhood to the task and have built our nation.

I’m no longer satisfied with the call to “Arise ye sons of the Baymen’s Clan”.

We cannot afford to ignore the daughters, mothers, sisters of the Baymen.

We are all called to arise, put on our armour, clear our land, and drive back tyrants.

We cannot continue to be invisible, faceless, nameless or absent from our anthemic expression of the life of the nation that WE helped to birth.

Celebrate yourselves today, Women of Belize, because we would not be a nation without your hard work.

As GCP pointedly observed, “Nation-building is a task for giants, little men have tried and failed.”

I salute the Giants who have built our nation today, the women of Belize!

Happy International Women’s Day!
