By BBN Staff: As countries around the world highlight pertinent women’s issues during the celebration of International Women’s Month, there is a special emphasis on gender-based violence and its surrounding issues.
Self-defense Instructor Renee Wentz is challenging parents to end the cycle of gender-based violence by changing the way they discipline their children. Wentz, a family and marriage counselor, says that corporal punishment of children in the homes cultures a child into thinking that violence can be used as a means of control, a pattern which sets them up to take violence into their relationships later in life.
“It begins in the home, so how do you expect them to turn it off when they become 18? It carries into schools, it carries into the streets, because they haven’t heard of any other way to get their needs met?” Wentz said.
Wentz also spoke on violence between intimate partners, which she described as an escalating process that has signs along the way.
“Nobody punches you in the face on the first date,” Wentz added, “there is a grooming process in a way…”
Wentz encourages persons in new relationships to study how their partners study how their partners treat relatives, friends, how they behave towards people like wait staff at a restaurant, to get an idea of what kind of temperament their partner has. she noted that another
warning sign of a possibly abusive relationship in the long term is a partner needing to know the movements and activities of their significant other at all times.
