“Student Eagles” leave for Costa Rica to represent Galen at the 34th MOAS

Posted: Tuesday, March 12, 2019. 11:05 am CST.

Galen University: Galen University’s (GU) students held a ‘mock presentation’ on Friday in front of the  CEO, Mr. Kostas Karanikis, faculty and staff as well as their peers before leaving the  country on Saturday as young Galen Belizean Ambassadors. They will participate in the  upcoming 34th MOAS (Model Organization of the American States), General Assembly at the  Universidad Latina, Torre Mercedes campus, in Paseo Colón, Costa Rica, on March 11th  through the 13th, The GU delegation of eight students are Rochelle Aldina Harrison Polanco,  Gianni Michelle Lalchand, Digna Melva Ramirez, Keila J, Hernandez Hegar, Edith Gisellie  Ku, Mario Alberto Villeda, Larry Eliel Tzib, and Josue Paz. They were selected from among
20 short-listed qualified candidates with excellent academic standing who can  communicate fluently in both English and Spanish. These qualified students are being  accompanied and led by Professors Osmond R. Martinez, Ph.D. and Lydia Balderamos
Loskot, Ph.D.

The unique plan for this year’s GU’s student delegates and all those participating is  that they will all be expected to deliver their presentations and carry out their assigned  duties by communicating only in Spanish. According to the OAS.ORG website, “The MOAS is a simulation exercise of the OAS General Assembly where, through role-playing, students represent the diplomats and political officials of the Member States of the OAS and follow parliamentary proceedings to debate and approve resolutions dealing with current issues on the Inter-American agenda. The Models foster the development of leadership skills in youth such as negotiation, team-work and problem solving.” This organization works to reach
students in its model assemblies of their OAS Members’ States. At least 1500 students and
100 teachers participate yearly.

Dr. Cynthia Eve Aird shared that “her students will gain valuable knowledge and understanding of democratic values as well as become familiar with the priorities of the Inter-American agenda and the work of the OAS. They will have the privilege to engage in debate, lobbying, negotiation and participate in working groups. Our group is well prepared. They should be able to part take in an exemplary manner.” She also added that
Galen had previously participated in a similar MOAS in 2015 that was held in St. Kitts & Nevis and this year’s MOAS promises to be an exciting and engaging event. Contribution and assistance for this year’s participation were made by several organizations, and companies
along with the support of the BTB and the University. Galen University and the “Student Eagles” greatly appreciate all their supporters and their enthusiasm.
