“No independent investigation into Mason is not a good look for GOB,” says BNTU

Posted: Friday, March 15, 2019. 9:46 am CST.

BBN Staff: The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) said this week that the Government of Belize’s failure to launch an independent investigation into the affairs of accused murderer William “Danny” Mason, causes the public to question their motives.

During the 2016 Stand up for Belize Campaign, the BNTU had demanded that GOB commission an independent investigation because of Mason’s apparent connections to ranking members of the Belize Police Department.

BNTU President, Elena Smith said that during negotiations, Prime Minister Dean Barrow had asked the union to submit terms of reference (TOR) for the scope of the investigation. Smith said that the BNTU submitted the TOR as per his request, but never heard from the PM again about the issue.

“We shared our concerns – it was a serious concern for us and the public at large and we never got any indication on whether there was even an attempt to try and find somebody…” Smith said. “It leaves you to wonder is it that they are really serious in addressing this matter or not?”

Mason, who is currently on trial for the murder of Pastor Llewellyn Lucas has a series of other allegations against him, including fraud for his multiple identities and multiple gun licenses for each of those identities, as well as kidnapping and extortion.

His murder trial began on Tuesday.
