By Aaron Humes: Accused almost a year ago of the May 3rd, 2018 shooting murder of 29-year-old Jason Travis Sutherland of Central American Boulevard in Belize City, Verris Ventura, 24, of Caesar Ridge Road was set free on Friday morning.
The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions indicated that it would withdraw the charge without prejudice, causing Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts Anderson to release him immediately.
Another alleged murder suspect has been set free, a directive coming from the DPP’s office.
In court, no reason was given for the withdrawal but we were told that is was due to insufficient evidence related to identification of the shooter on that night.
Sutherland was shot dead just hours after appearing in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on a traffic offense where he pleaded guilty. At the time it was reported that the assailant pretended to have come to purchase weed from Sutherland.
As he entered his yard and came back out, the shooter opened fire on him, eight bullets to the body counted.
Ventura is originally from Hopkins in the Stann Creek District but was captured on Ambergris Caye two months after the incident.
