Belize Peace Movement requests that BNTU be added as monitor for referendum

Posted: Monday, March 18, 2019. 3:25 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The Belize Peace Movement (BPM) today sent a letter to Chief Elections officer, Josephine Tamai requesting that the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) be added to monitor the April 10th referendum.

On February 26, 2019, the Government of Belize invited the PUP and other non-governmental organizations to monitor the national referendum process.

“ In considering the significance of this referendum and the need for utmost transparency and oversight in the polling and counting processes, The Belize Peace Movement proposes that the oversight polling and counting functions be carried out by the teachers of Belize and coordinated thru the efforts of the Belize National Teachers Union,” the letter states.

The BPM says that in coming to this decision, they have noted that the teachers are deployed across the length and breadth of the country and that they are familiar and well regarded in their respective communities.

Additionally, teachers and the BNTU also have not taken a position on the ICJ issue.
