Mason’s attorney wants better treatment for him in prison

Posted: Tuesday, March 19, 2019. 10:30 am CST.

ng>By BBN Staff: Herbert Panton, attorney for accused murderer William “Danny” Mason and his four co-accused, says that he will be advocating for better treatment for his client while he is on remand at the Belize Central
Prison.

In an interview with Channel 7 News yesterday, Panton said that prison protocols were prohibiting him from adequately meeting his clients, which is a violation of their rights. Panton said that he spoke to the
head of the prison about the issue, but was told that the protocol would not be changed.

Panton also said specifically, that Mason’s treatment in prison also amounted to a violation of his rights, as he has not been found guilty of any crime.

“William Mason is on remand, he has not been convicted of anything, he is in Super Max, he is locked down 23 hours of the day. That can’t be right, we had asked in the start of the trial for an adjournment to
seek judicial review because the court needs to direct the prison you can’t continue treating prisoners like that,” Panton said.

The trial has numerous witnesses that have yet to be called and is expected to last until sometime in April
