By BBN Staff: Belize will join the rest of the world in celebrating World Meteorological Day 2019 on March 23 under the theme “The Sun, the Earth and the Weather”.
This day commemorates the coming into force on 23rd March, 1950, of the convention establishing the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
The sun is located about 150 million kilometers (93 million miles) from Earth.
The sun delivers the energy that powers all life on Earth.
It drives the weather, ocean currents and the hydrological cycle. So ultimately, the sun is responsible for all weather on Earth.
The sun shapes people’s mood and daily activities and is an inspiration for music, photography and art.
This year’s theme reflects the core purpose of WMO and the essential role of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services in monitoring the Earth system in order to deliver weather forecasts and advise policymakers about climate variability and change.
The National Meteorological Service of Belize continues to provide services that protect lives and property from extreme weather and build long-term climate resilience.
