DOE begins education campaign to phase out single-use plastics

Posted: Wednesday, March 20, 2019. 7:22 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The Department of the Environment (DOE) launched an education campaign today, as a part of the country’s overall move to ban the use of single-use plastic bags, utensils and styrofoam containers.

DOE, which falls under the in the Ministry of Forestry, Fisheries, the Environment, and Sustainable Development, launched the “Say NO to Plastics” education campaign at the Best Western Biltmore Plaza Hotel today.

The education campaign features the slogan “Choose to Refuse Single Use”, and starts out with two locally produced television advertisements to be aired on local TV stations, and two international ads airing on American television, advocating the use of reusable bags and containers rather than single-use disposables. The campaign also features posters and flyers, and even a music jungle composed by young Belizean artists.

Chief Executive Officer, Percival Cho, explained that the education campaign will last for six months but the phase-out will be a gradual process, beginning with the enactment of new regulations on April 22, which prohibit the importation of non-biodegradable plastic items. The phase-out is expected to run up to the end of 2019.

The Government of Belize decided to begin the phaseout of single-use plastic shopping bags and Styrofoam and plastic food utensils in March 2018. Conservation NGO’s celebrated the decision, which they said made Belize a leader for sustainable development within the region.
