By Delroy Cuthkelvin: This past weekend, we travelled south and were astonished at the tremendous progress in the ongoing transformation of the Hummingbird Highway.

Much of it is about safety. The Hummingbird is inarguably our country’s most scenic highway, but portions of it are also exceedingly dangerous as the road winds through miles and miles of mountains and valleys.

During the UDP Manuel Esquivel Administration of 1993 to 1998, the rehabilitation and repaving of the Hummingbird had already entailed much widening and reshaping of huge portions of that highway. Under this UDP Dean Barrow Administration, the work continues as much of the highway has already been rehabilitated, restructured and resurfaced, with vital road-safety features, such as new guard rails, traffic signs, line markings and road studs (or cat’s eyes) installed for effective daytime and nighttime driving.

And now, with these additional works that entail further, substantial reshaping and widening of critical portions of the road, as well as replacement of the remainder of those outdated one-lane bridges (one at Alta Vista already replaced) with new two-lane structures as wide as the road itself, the Hummingbird Highway will become almost as safe as it is beautiful.

This particular project is only one among many being executed nationwide, some already completed, others ongoing, and a number of new ones yet to unfold, as Prime Minister Right Honorable Dean Barrow emphasized in his budget speech last Friday.

True, these infrastructure projects are beautifying and uplifting, but they are NOT just about esthetics. They are fundamentally and functionally about increasing productivity for the economy and improving safety for the people.

It’s an obvious truth that apparently escapes the Leader of the Opposition who, in criticizing the new budget, declared, “This government is about projects, and we need a government that is about people.”

The truth is that, as the nation’s infrastructure is transformed, so are the lives of the people. As Sherlock Holmes would have put it, “Elementary, my dear Watson!”
