By Aaron Humes: A Belize City woman spared her partner a potentially serious charge of arson being tried after she told the Magistrate’s Court he had repaid for the items – four dozen Victoria’s Secret assorted underwear.
Thirty-six-year-old Yusuf Bilal Jr., of Neal Pen Road and a soldier in the Belize Defence Force (BDF), is accused of unlawfully burning the clothing, valued at 6 hundred dollars, in October of 2018, during a domestic dispute.
Bilal’s partner, 57 year old Helen Gentle, had reported to police that on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at about 6:30 a.m., she was at home when Bilal sent angry text messages threatening to burn her underwear. He reportedly accused her of not wanting to wear them for him, but for others.
He later came home from the BDF compound at Price Barracks, Ladyville and went straight into her bedroom, carrying out the underwear and going outside to a coconut tree in the yard near her daughter’s house and burning them as he had threatened; Gentle said she thought he had left the yard.
But according to Gentle, he has since repaid her for the underwear, and after failing to get the ear of police, she came to court today at the start of trial to request no further court action.
Magistrate Emmerson Banner agreed and set Bilal free.
