By BBN Staff: Belize participated in the 2nd High-Level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation held in Buenos Aires, Argentina on the 20-21, March 2019.
Patrick Andrews, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stressed the importance of South-South Cooperation in assisting developing countries to achieve Agenda 2030 and other internationally agreed development goals.
Belize joined the many expressions of concerns by members on the hardship occasioned by the designation of countries as middle income in accessing concessionary financing for development; and the stagnation and decline in official development aid.
Andrews took the opportunity to highlight the positive effects on the country’s development resulting from a scaling up of South-South Cooperation.
Andrews also participated as a lead discussant in a side event on “Leveraging South-South and Triangular Cooperation to advance sustainable development in Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States”.
Andrews noted Belize’s experience in sharing of best practices in coral protection and restoration in a triangular cooperation scheme with SIDS and other developing countries.
The Conference was convened to review the trends in South-South and Triangular Cooperation, including the progress made by the international community in supporting and promoting such cooperation, and identifying new opportunities as well as challenges and suggestions to overcome them.
