By BBN Staff: After six road traffic fatalities over the weekend involving motorcycles, the Belize Police Department is embarking on a public education campaign and law enforcement crackdown on motorcyclists.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said today that the number of motorcycle-related deaths has become a major concern for the department, prompting him to sanction the development of a road safety pamphlet for motorcyclists. The pamphlet, which he hopes to have
completed by Wednesday will complement other public education activities such as senior officers doing media rounds and talking about motorcycle highway safety.
Williams said that that the department is looking at instances where motorcyclists or their passengers are riding without a helmet, using pedestrian crossings as a means of getting from one side of the road to another, or riding with more than two persons on a motorcycle.

“We need to enforce the law where motorcycles are concerned,” Williams said. “I also want to appeal to the riders of motorcycles to be a bit more cautious in the use of these very dangerous equipments.”

He said that there will also be a crackdown on the drivers of vehicles on the roads for the instances where accidents were not the fault of motorcyclists. He stressed that it will be a difficult process but that the department is committed to reaching as many people as possible to ensure the safety of persons traveling the highways.
