By Aaron Humes: According to 23 year old Josue Ortiz, he never meant to intentionally take the life of a woman who refused his advances.

But the way he chose to end her life on July 24th, 2016, could potentially cost him the rest of his.

Ortiz this week pleaded guilty in the Belmopan Magistrate’s Court to manslaughter in the death of 34 year old Bella Regina Williams, known as “Gina”. Sentencing will take place on April 15th.

Early in the morning of July 25th, Williams’ battered, partially clothed body was found in the yard of her family residence by her relatives including her daughter.

A medical examination showed six wounds to different areas of the head caused by a blunt instrument; cuts, bruises and other swelling to the face, scalp and upper limbs; a fracture of the right side of the head up to the base of the cranium and hemorrhage. Examiner Dr. Mario Estradabran concluded she had died from massive brain damage caused by injuries to the head with a blunt instrument.

That Saturday night around 9:30 p.m., brothers Josue and Fredis Ortiz went out to Las Flores’ La Cabana night club, where they met Gina. The group hung out until the bar closed around 1:00 a.m., when they decided to go up to San Ignacio Town in a taxi accompanied by another woman.

En route in the vicinity of Roaring Creek, Gina changed her mind about going and she and Josue Ortiz got out. They began walking back toward Belmopan and were picked up by a vehicle which took them to Gina’s address. It was here, Ortiz later told police, that he asked Gina for sex and she refused. He grabbed her, she tried to get away and fell to the ground.

Ortiz admitted that out of panic, he picked up two stones and hit Gina with them in the head, then fled the scene.

Authorities were then called to the scene where they found her lying in a pool of blood, pants, and underwear apparently pulled down. Police tracked down Ortiz, who told them he did not want to kill Gina, but that when he asked her for sexual intercourse she tried to run off and lost her footing, apparently hitting her head and going unconscious. Rather than finding help, he knocked her out with the rocks and left for home on a bicycle. He was charged with murder but decided to plea to the lesser charge.

Ortiz is defended by Oswald Twist; the Crown is represented by Javier Chan.
