By Aaron Humes: Strip away the flowery language, says Leader of Opposition Business in the Senate Eamon Courtenay, and this year’s Budget does not reflect a proper mix of investment in infrastructure and investment in people. Moreover, it does not reflect proper figures produced by the Government. In all, he said, it is “insipid, boring, uninspiring.”

Sen. Courtenay pointed out that social issues such as crime, gang violence, poverty, and unemployment are largely ignored. Nearly half of school-age students are placed in the at-risk category; 5% of these are underweight and 16% suffer malnutrition.

A keynote is the sharp decline of agriculture’s contribution to the gross domestic product. Sitting at just under 20% in 2008, it is now around half that ten years later. Courtenay called for a serious commitment to agriculture so that we can feed ourselves and make a splash on the regional and international markets, citing sugar as a key example.

Courtenay made it clear that the Opposition People’s United Party would never suggest that the Caracol Road or Coastal Road or other major roads should not be built. But not, he added, at the expense of other national priorities, and not without a clear statement of the priorities for each road.///
