By BBN Staff: The University of Belize (UB) is mourning its third student for this year that lost his life due to violence.
President of UB Clement Sankat issued a statement this evening, lamenting the loss of Kevin Frutos, 26, and condemning the ever-rising incidents of violent crime that brought about his death.
Sankat stressed that Frutos was a humble and hard-working student, who held a fulltime job and went to school. Sakat also said that Frutos’s death affects him on a personal level as well as amounting to a great loss for the institution.
” It is even more distressing and heartbreaking to know that his life was taken so senselessly and tragically. Kevin possessed great potential,” Sankat said. He went on to say “I must reiterate these killings of our young people must stop and this matter must be addressed.”
He also called on UB as a community to be vigilant and mindful about personal security matters both on and off campus.
Frutos’s body was found yesterday in a shallow grave in the vicinity of George Price Boulevard. Police say that he was stabbed to death and the apparent motivation for the crime was robbery. He was scheduled to graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting this June.
His death comes just over a month after the tragic losses of Masaki Yanai and Dwayne Cummings, who were both fatally shot in February.
