By The National Student Union of Belize:

To the students and people of Belize,

I am writing to you on behalf of the students of this country that are down trodden, the ones that are voiceless, the ones that are faceless, the ones that are deliberately forgotten and set aside for selfish and unworthy reasons, and certainly the ones that are shouting for help from across the Maya Mountains but are silenced as they fill their chests with air. This letter is also for the students who were senselessly murdered and quietly disappeared. May their souls rest in peace and rise in glory. However, not a single eyebrow was raised from several heads of institutions and student governments that claim to promote student growth and social justice. We are not against them but we will hold them accountable for their deeds and misdeeds.

These are the same students that are waiting uselessly for a sign of their government’s serious disposition to achieve better learning conditions especially through improved infrastructures and quality education. Despite this, they still show up to learn, even if learning means to have classes outside in a climate of oppression. It seems as if poor education infrastructure and roads are exclusive to rural villages in the south such as the classrooms at Holy Angel’s RC School in Pomona Village and the road between Machikilha and Dolores where students have to trek 5 miles to Dolores Village just to catch a bus to Corozan Creek Technical School.

These are the ones whose thoughts and actions are held at ransom and are cast away in a box of broken dreams and tragedies solely for corrupt officials to maintain the status-quo. These are the ones that are proudly shouting “long live Belize” but are walking through thick mud and jungle to attend their daily classes. The obstinacy of corruption that constitutes an arbitrary government and incapable community leaders have not only left unresolved the concerns, pains and sorrows of students but have also generalized student drop outs, brain drain, cultural hegemony and poverty on a whole. Some have appealed for help countlessly only for the dialogue to be regressed and for practical solutions to seem far-fetched. The government has perjured itself by promising better conditions for the students, especially in the south, but none have materialized.

We do not understand your doubts and fears and we do not walk your paths neither do we intend to. Though you try to dissipate our voices and hold us in exchange, we will get out of all your boxes. We shall not be compromised and victimized no more. We won’t be repressed from our freedom and true expression no more. This social bondage has produced mass deception and bigotry and a system for the dead.

You may label us as delinquents and dissidents, but if that is what it takes for us to be heard, if that is what it takes for us to have a voice and to have a face then we shall do so by any means necessary.

With this said, our mission is to represent, support and empower tertiary level students of Belize to contribute to the continuous improvement in the quality of tertiary level education and to contribute to a more just society by engaging students to have a formal channel to voice their views on all matters affecting the quality of life in Belize.

To all tertiary and secondary level students of Belize, this is your platform created by students like you and created for students like you. Though yesterday may have been the right time for this to have promulgated, today is the best time to act and make a difference. We urge you to be a part of our team. You can join us by sending a message to our Facebook page at “The National Student Union of Belize” or e-mail us at [email protected].

Sincerely,
