By Aaron Humes: Michael Gladden, 39, is an employee of the Central Prison, but on Friday the Crooked Tree resident pleaded guilty to a charge that could have made him an inmate.
Fortunately, he is a first time offender and employed as a prison officer, and so he was only fined, not confined, on a charge of grievous harm. Gladden admitted to punching his neighbor, Benjamin Gentle, breaking his jaw. Gentle said Gladden took exception to his playing his music too loudly, but Gentle claimed without showing proof that he was acting in self-defense.
Gentle and his son testified to the attack. The elder Gentle says he has medical bills of 15 thousand dollars and rising and intends to seek additional compensation through the courts. But for the criminal case, Magistrate Khadeen Palmer found Gladden guilty and set a fine of $2,500 to be paid by August 30, 2019, in default, 2 years imprisonment.
She explained to the victim who was present in court for the guilty verdict, that if he wanted compensation in more than $1,000, he will have to take out a civil suit through the Supreme Court and not through the Civil Court on North Front Street as they are unable to give any kind of compensation over $1,500.
