“Bamboo Basti” passes through Belize on ride through 34 countries

Posted: Wednesday, April 3, 2019. 11:22 am CST.

BBN Staff: Sebastian “Basti” Gutmann, a German environmentalist, is on a mission to ride around the world on his self-made bamboo bike and spread a message of sustainable living. That journey has brought him to Belize this week.

Gutmann spoke with Breaking Belize News, sharing his vision to ride the 40.075 km long journey, traveling through 34 countries, and planting 40,075 trees along the way. Gutmann said he chose the number 40,075 because the diameter of the equator is 40.075 km.  He has been on the journey for a year and seven months planting trees along with the people he meets along the way.

He has partnered with an NGO called Plant for the Planet, which focuses on raising awareness about the effects of climate change. Gutmann said he was driven by his love of travel and the environment to leave everything behind and pursue this journey, which will take about three years to see all the way through.

“We are at all times dreaming, but most people don’t do it. You have to follow your dreams. You have to follow your passions and be passionate about what you’re doing,” Gutmann said.

Gutmann said he found out about Belize through “couch surfing”, a forum where travelers network and host other travelers so they don’t have to pay for lodging. Gutmann met up with Ravi Nandwani, a Belizean couch surfer who lives in Hattiville, back in 2017 while Nandwani was in Pakistan.

Gutmann set out early this morning, headed for Mexico. The trip will take two days and he intends to do “wild camping” in the bushes for the nights he does not have a place to stay.
