ComPol seeks changes in laws to curb alcohol-related deaths

Posted: Wednesday, April 3, 2019. 1:24 pm CST.

BBN Staff: Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, says that the Belize Police Department will be proposing changes to the Intoxicating Liquor Licensing Act to try and reduce incidents in which alcohol consumption contributes to loss of life.

Williams said that the department would be making proposals for legislative changes as well as working in tandem with the Intoxicating Liquor Licensing Board in an effort to better control the sale of alcohol.

He stressed that police will be vigilant in ensuring that establishments meet the requirements to have liquor licenses and that they are selling alcohol within the parameters of those licenses.

The approach is not new for Williams, who since 2015 in his role as head of then Eastern Division South Side, began cracking down on quality of life crimes such as public drinking. At that time, the majority of shooting victims were shot while socializing, and he determined that public drinking had a major role in people getting killed.

“If you are not on the street loitering or drinking your enemy cannot find you to shoot you. Period,” Williams said at the time.
