BBN Staff: Major crimes are down except for unlawful sexual intercourse and rape.

A quarterly report issued today by the Joint Intelligence Coordinating Center of the Belize Police Department confirmed this claim.

The report revealed that murders are down by 14 when you compare the 46 for this same period last year with the 32 for 2019.

However, rape has seen an increase of 8 incidents when the 5 cases in 2018 are compared to the 13 cases in 2019.

On the other hand, robbery has seen a decrease of 3 incidents when you compare the 64 cases in 2018 to 61 cases in 2019.

Burglary has seen a dramatic decrease of 41 incidents when you compare the 188 cases in 2018 to the 147 cases in 2019.

There was also a remarkable reduction in the case of theft as there were 28 cases in 2018 but now only 18 cases in 2019.

The incidents of unlawful sexual intercourse saw a slight increase from the 15 in 2018 to 17 in 2019.

Overall there has been a decrease in major crimes for this quarter of 2019.

Last year the figures stood at 346. This year figures stand at 288.

When asked about this reduction, Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, told our newsroom that it is attributed to proactive policing.

According to him, ranking officers and their subordinates have bought into the vision of better policing.

This according to him, includes relentlessly executing the established crime-fighting strategy.
