By Aaron Humes:A 42 year old fisherman, father to a 9 year old son, avoided jail time for being in possession of unlicensed ammunition which he says is for his own protection.
The Gang Suppression Unit (GSU) visited Shane Morgan’s Belize City home on Saturday and recovered an object resembling and confirmed to be a homemade firearm, with a trigger with a metal pistol grip, and one 9 mm Lugar brand GFL live round of ammunition inside it.
This type of weapon is prohibited and Morgan was looking at serious time behind bars, but he was only charged for the bullet found inside the gun. He is otherwise an upstanding member of society and the only breadwinner for his son, and therefore Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson elected only to fine him $3,000 for the offense.
The fine is due by November 30, 2019, in default 1 year behind bars.
