By BBN Staff: The Belize Cable Television Operators’ Association BCTVOA and HBO Latin America Group have signed an agreement which enables cable providers in Belize to legally provide content for over 30 channels from the HBO brand without any copyright violations.

The parties had an official signing ceremony yesterday at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza.  The agreement, which spent over a year in negotiations, comes as a part of a larger worldwide push for copyright compliance.

Under the agreement, Belizeans will now legally have access to channels such as HBO, HBO2, HBO Signature, HBO Family, Max, Max Prime, The History Channel, A&E, and SyFy, just to name a few.

Evan Tench, President of the BCTVOA, said that the signing represents the cable industry taking the lead in Belize as far as copyright compliance. He noted that going forward, there will be other content creators coming to negotiate, but that the association will try to keep prices reasonable for customers.

Javier Figueras, Corporate Vice President for HBO, said that the industry is facing major challenges from dealing with pirated content from sources like Firesticks and Roku, and said that using these methods to stream content were the same as shoplifting.

“It is illegal and is something that needs to be addressed. We are waiting for confirmation from the Government fo Belize to start collaboration because this is something we are serious about,” Figueras said.
