By BBN Staff: Following a full day of arguments, the Court of Appeal Justices have decided that they will hear the case brought by the People’s United Party (PUP) challenging the legality of the upcoming referendum.
The Government of Belize (GOB) and the PUP have until tomorrow evening to file their skeleton arguments in preparation for the full trial on Monday. The PUP has challenged the upcoming referendum on the basis that the 2008 Special Agreement with Guatemala, which gave rise to the referendum, was done unconstitutionally and is therefore illegal.
Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin granted the PUP an injunction on Wednesday, which bars GOB from holding the referendum until the matter has been decided in court, however, all indications suggest GOB is planning to move forward with the referendum on Wednesday, April 10, as planned.
