By BBN Staff: Amidst the uncertainty of whether or not the April 10 referendum will actually take place, a team from the Commonwealth, which is supposed to observe the referendum, has arrived in Belize.
The Commonwealth observer group, led by Hubert A Ingraham, former Prime Minister of the Bahamas, is composed of ten specialists from across the Commonwealth with backgrounds in election management, law, gender, civil society, media, and politics, who were called in to witness the referendum process and verify that it goes without any illegalities.
However, the fate of the referendum is to be decided in the Court of Appeal on Monday, with only a day’s space between the court hearing and the referendum date. It remains to be seen if the team will have anything to observe. In the meantime, the team is scheduled to meet with several stakeholder groups including NGOs, trade unions, representatives from the private sector, the Referendum Commission, the Referendum Unit and other observers.
