Belize Peace Movement meets with Referendum Observer Groups

Posted: Monday, April 8, 2019. 3:42 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize Peace Movement (BPM) has met with observer groups from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Commonwealth Secretariat to discuss their concerns about the Referendum on taking the territorial dispute with Guatemalan to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The BPM met with the Commonwealth delegation on Saturday, April, 6, and met with the CARICOM group earlier today, to discuss issues such as the legal framework for conduct of the referendum, voter registration, voting by proxy, campaigning/financing, and the content of the “education campaign” as it is presented on social and mainstream media.

“The main visual and audio media outlets are dominated by the YES camp,” the BMP said.

The BPM’s Robert Lopez, spoke with Breaking Belize News this afternoon, saying that the CARICOM delegation showed more concern and asked more pertinent questions, but that ultimately both meetings were a success.

The BMP which has been a very vocal opponent to taking the dispute to the ICJ has repeatedly requested to be an observer on referendum day to ensure the integrity of the process, but have been denied by the relevant authorities.
