Belize participates in regional fisheries workshop

Posted: Wednesday, April 10, 2019. 10:22 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Belize was among the 14 countries represented at the  World Trade Organization (WTO) Regional Workshop on ‘Fisheries Subsidies for Caribbean Countries’ which began in Jamaica yesterday.

The three-day workshop gathers more than 30 government officials from the Caribbean in an effort to update the participants on the current status and main issues in the global fisheries subsidies negotiations which are currently taking place at the WTO in Geneva, Switzerland.

The workshop will also facilitate discussions on specific interests and concerns regarding those negotiations.

The workshop gathered representatives from The Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Guyana, Haiti, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.

The fisheries subsidies negotiations were launched at the fourth WTO Ministerial Conference in Doha, Qatar, in 2001. Delegates attending the 11th WTO Ministerial Conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2017, agreed to conclude the negotiations this year.

The negotiations are geared towards clarifying and improving existing WTO disciplines on fisheries subsidies; strengthening WTO rules on subsidies provided to the fisheries sector; and eliminating subsidies contributing to illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
